Nutritional Counseling for Eating Disorders

One of the most important aspects of eating disorder treatment is nutritional counseling.   When a man or woman enters into a treatment program for anorexia, bulimia or any other potentially dangerous eating disorder, their eating habits have likely suffered greatly as a result of their condition.  Bulimia treatment and anorexia treatment in particular require nutritional counseling so that the individual can get back to a “healthy place” in terms of their body weight and stability, and also learn how to adapt to the new and improved eating habits they will develop in the treatment program.

Why is Nutritional Counseling so Important for those with Eating Disorders?

When an individual develops an eating disorder, they neglect attention to a proper diet.  Both the food they eat, and more importantly, how they consume it are rife with bad habits (that in many cases can become deadly).  Nutritional counseling helps stabilize the eating habits of the individual, get them on the right track in terms of scheduling meals, and finally provides the tools needed to maintain these habits on their own when treatment is complete.

What Happens During Nutritional Counseling for Eating Disorders?

There are several key elements involved in nutritional counseling for those individuals who are trying to overcome eating disorders.  These elements include:

  • Developing sound eating habits – Portion control and the timing of meals are just two of the ways nutritional counselors help their patients overcome eating disorders.  Many individuals have engaged in behavior that had them eating too little (anorexia) or too much (bulimia and binge eating) and therefore need to start back at the basic of learning about correct eating habits.
  • Nutritional education – In many ways, the counselors who work with eating disorder patients are educators, teaching these individuals the importance of a healthy diet as it pertains to their long-term well-being.    Informal lessons on proper nutrition are common is eating disorder treatment programs.
  • Nutritional planning – Counselors will also work with their patients to develop specific plans for every meal of the day.  By providing a regimen for the patient to follow, the counselor is removing the guess-work out what to eat and when.
