Tips For Effective Eating Disorder Treatment

When an individual enters into treatment for an eating disorder such as bulimia or anorexia, their chance of recovery relies as much on the quality of the treatment program as it does on their own physical and psychological makeup.

And while the individual in question is going to differ wildly from case to case, there are several elements that can be found in almost every effective eating disorder treatment program.

Psychiatric Counseling – Eating disorders are conditions of the brain.  The individual is engaging in destructive behaviors because their brain is causing them to have a distorted view of their self-image or the process of eating food.    One-on-one counseling with a therapist who understands these issues is the hallmark of any effective treatment program.

Nutritional Counseling - Educating the individual with an eating disorder about the importance of proper nutrition may seem overly simplistic, but there is no way to understate the importance of these nutritional counseling programs.  Essentially, eating has become anathema to the man or woman with bulimia or anorexia – and as such they have lost with the proper ways to fuel their bodies.

Group Counseling – One of the most effective methodologies employed by eating disorder treatment programs is group counseling.  During group therapy sessions, the individual is able to gain support and share experiences with other people who are struggling with the same challenges.   Because those with an eating disorder often suffer in silence and isolation, this can be a truly transformative time that produces positive results for everyone involved.

What are the Most Common Types of Eating Disorders?

The treatment programs described above generally work with a number of different types of eating disorders, including:

  • Anorexia Nervosa.  One of the most common and potentially harmful forms of eating disorders, anorexia causes an individual to literally starve themselves to death in an attempt to achieve an unattainable and unrealistic body type.  Anorexia treatment involves stabilizing the individual’s health and getting
  • Bulimia Nervosa.  Another eating disorder tied to self-image, bulimia occurs when the individual eats a meal, then uses purging techniques such as self-induced vomiting, laxatives or other means to remove the calories from their systems immediately.  Bulimia counseling requires a combination of psychological counseling and physical wellness programs in order to be successful.
  • Binge Eating.  Individuals who engage in binge eating are unable to control their food intake.  They eat compulsively to create comfort, escape pain and a variety of other root causes that are quite similar to those found in drug addiction.  Binge eating is treated in a similar manner to other eating disorders – even if the threat to one’s health is more long-term and less immediate than anorexia or related conditions.
