California Obsessive Compulsive Therapy

Every year, thousands of California residents are diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.  Even more, however, never seek the appropriate anxiety treatment program needed to help overcome this debilitating illness.  California Obsessive Compulsive therapy programs work with individuals who are unable to function in the normal flow of life because of their OCD.

What is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder?

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder in which the individual suffers from irrational fears and worries.  The individual tries to calm these fears by performing rituals or repeated behaviors that in reality have no bearing on the outcome of the daily lives.

Hallmark signs and symptoms of OCD include:

  • Fear of contamination (either by touching objects that others have touched or shaking hands)
  • Irrational levels of doubt about whether the doors are locked or appliances are left on
  • The need to stack or organize items repeatedly and compulsively
  • Stress when objects are not facing the right way
  • A preoccupation with dirt or germs in the house or at the workplace

OCD can strike men and women of all ages, and tends to surface during adolescence.  Some individuals however, may begin to exhibit obsessive compulsive symptoms during their 20’s or 30’s.

What Happens During Obsessive Compulsive Therapy

While much is still not known about the root causes of OCD, studies have presented several theories about the origins of the condition, including:

  • Biology.  Many individuals may simply have a chemical imbalance that leaves them predisposed to OCD.
  • Environmental causes.  Other research suggests that individual develop OCD because of their environment – performing certain actions as a defense mechanism and then becoming more and more obsessed with those actions over time.
  • Low serotonin levels.  Serotonin a chemical that controls messages sent by the brain.  Recent studies have found that low levels of the chemical are commonly found in OCD patients.  When these patients take medication to raise their serotonin levels, the OCD symptoms become less severe.

With so little information about the causes of OCD, the therapist must focus on helping the individual cope with and control their symptoms.
