Stress Management Tips For Life's Little Problems

The phrase “don’t sweat the small stuff” has been used to death over the past decade or so, but when you get right down to it, that’s some pretty solid advice. Stress management programs will all tell you the same thing: don’t get too worked up over the little annoyances and inconveniences of life. If you’re coping with a major live event, such as the loss of a spouse, divorce or getting fired, then you are going to be “entitled” to feel some legitimate stress. For these types of problems, seeking out counseling is highly recommended. Or if you are repeatedly having trouble controlling your temper, then a professional anger management program is a wise course of action. But if any of the following events are causing you undue stress, then try to focus on lowering their significance in your life.

Five things we shouldn’t let stress us out

  1. Traffic- Getting stuck in traffic jams, or getting cut-off by an inconsiderate driver can really raise the blood pressure. We need to learn how to take a deep breath and think positively when these things occur. Try breathing exercises or relaxation CDs when sitting in traffic. And NEVER drive angry after you’ve been cut off. That type of behavior can be a danger to yourself and everyone else on the road.
  2. Waiting in long lines- As the population continues to grow, and customer service continues to falter, long lines become more and more of an unavoidable fact of life. Take a breath and try to get organized for later in the day. Make productive use of the time.
  3. The kids- We love our kids, but some days they just drive us crazy. Never lash out or let your stress get the better of you in front of your children. They learn our behaviors and mimic them for life.
  4. The weather- Those with Seasonal Depression Syndrome get depressed during certain times of the year. That’s a legitimate illness. Acting stressed out when it rains on your golf day is not. Forget about the weather and think of every day – be it sunny or cloudy – as a gift!
  5. Bills- Nobody likes opening up the mail and seeing a stack of bills. But they’re just a part of life, so why get so stressed out about them? Instead, think about everything those bills allow you to enjoy: a roof over your head, the ability to talk to loved ones thousands of miles away and hours of televised entertainment. See? It’s all in the way you look at things.
NOTE: If any of the events or situations above are causing you reoccurring stress, and you fear that your health and well-being are suffering as a result, seek out a stress management program that will teach you the coping skills you need to relax and move past such inconveniences.
