Midlife crisis counseling and divorce

Millions of men and women go through a midlife crisis when they are in their forties and fifties.  Feelings of discontent and dissatisfaction with their lives leads these individuals to act in ways that are not always in the best interest of themselves or their families.

Relationship between midlife crisis and divorce

Research has found that the majority of marriages that end in divorce as a result of a midlife crisis do so because it was the man who was going through the emotional change.  In situations such as these, there are several key factors associated with the relationship’s deterioration, and the eventual need for midlife crisis treatment and potentially divorce counseling

  • Extra-marital affair.   The number one cause of divorce in marriages where there is a midlife crisis is extra-marital affairs.  This most commonly occurs when the man, feeling bored, trapped or unfulfilled with pursue adulterous relationships outside of the marriage.  When these affairs come to life, trust is often damaged beyond repair, which consequently leads to divorce.
  • Lack of communication. When one spouse enters into a midlife crisis, they tend to stop communicating with the other member of the relationship.  Acting in a self-centered manner such as this can lead to any number of marital problems and tends to breed resentment.
  • Financial problems.  When an individual (again, usually a man in this case) is in the midst of a midlife crisis, he may make impulse purchases of large items such as sports cars, boats and other luxury items.  Being an impulse purchase, he is likely not paying attention to how these things are affecting the couple’s bottom line.  Also, many people going through a midlife crisis will quit their job on short notice – not taking into account the potential stress this action can cause on the family’s financial future.
  • Depression.   Depression symptoms often accompanies a midlife crisis, and when it does, there is an impact on the spouse and the rest of the family.  Individuals who suffer from depression are often unable to communicate their feelings or resolve problems in a productive way.  This can often lead to the type of marital discord which is a precursor to divorce.
