Female Depression Treatment

Depression is one of the most misunderstood mental illnesses in the world.  Millions of people experience depression every day, and are able to work through it, and then move on with their lives.  But for many individuals, especially women, depression can be a debilitating disease than keeps them from enjoying life, carries many serious symptoms and even puts them at risk for suicide.  But again, because of all those who experience less serious forms of depression, there is an attitude of “why can’t they just get over it” that pervades the general population.

For those women with serious, clinical depression there is no “getting over it. “ Instead, female depression treatment is the best course of action.

The importance of female depression treatment

Why is depression treatment for women so important?  Research has found that women experience depression twice as much as men do.  In addition, the symptoms associated with women who suffer from depression are different from those found in men.  Therefore a “one size fits all” treatment solution for both men and women is likely to see diminished results in women.

The common causes of depression in women include:

  • Genetic link to depression found in parents or grandparents
  • Concerns over loss of support system (spouse, friends, children)
  • Post-partum psychiatric illnesses
  • History of sexual or physical abuse
  • Menopausal symptoms

Signs and symptoms of female depression

  • Anxiety
  • Weight gain
  • Sleeplessness
  • Eating disorders
  • A loss of interest in family life or outside activities

How does female depression treatment work?

The first step in treating women with depression is understanding what is causing the illness.  Counseling professionals will work closely with the patient to find out if there is a link between the depression and certain life events (having a baby, relationship problems, etc.) or if there is a factor involving the woman’s past (sexual abuse, a genetic link, etc.).

Once the cause of the depression has been determined, the individual will undergo counseling in an effort to meet the problem head-on.  Counselors work with women to help them understand the root causes of their depression and develop the skills they need to overcome them.

Many programs will engage the woman in one-on-one counseling as well as family counseling, if applicable.  For example, if the woman’s spouse is considered to be a root cause of the condition, he may be brought in to take part in relationship counseling as a means of opening the lines of communication, and therefore moving towards a solution to the problem.

Role-playing with the counselor is also a popular methodology, as the woman is given a chance to act out certain scenarios and discover the best way to respond to triggers that bring about the symptoms of depression.
